Babies 2010 . African Grey Congos

How will you recognize them?
Congos are medium-sized parrots with grey plumage and bright red tail feathers that are absolutely stunning!

What are their personalities like?

Congos have a well-known reputation for being the most verbose parrots, and also for being very sensitive and highly intelligent. They have the capability to mimic the human voice as well as sounds in their environment. They are also known to be relatively quiet birds. Congos like to be the master of the household and tend to be a one-person bird, merely "tolerating" the remaining members of the family. This behavior can be prevented if corrected at an early age, and behavioral training and socialization are continued throughout the bird’s lifetime. Your parrot's temperament has a lot to do with how you raise them after they are weaned. You should encourage others to handle them. Consistency is paramount. Their life span is between 60 – 80 years in captivity, and to make your life with them more enjoyable, it is critical to train them when they’re young. Their devotion to a good owner is unshakable.

Are there any special considerations to be made?

No small unsupervised children with this bird.

New babies on the block

We are so very proud to announce that the Golden Cockatoo has baby Parakeets hatching out! Now is the perfect time to begin forming a bond with one of these little guys. If you’re interested in purchasing one, please call the store at (954) 725-0088; they will only be handfed by customer request!

Parakeets are inexpensive, stunning little birds with big personalities. They make great pets for children when they are purchased as hand fed babies. Parent-raised birds tend to be nippy and skittish around humans. However, a baby that’s been raised and handled by humans right from the very beginning will make a faithful companion.

When purchasing a bird, it is best to get one that is very young. The younger the bird is, the more you will be able to teach it. They are just like human babies in that they are very impressionable. Right now, our babies are at the perfect age to pick one out and tame and train it to be the perfect Parakeet that everyone always talks about: small, sweet, adoring, smart, and absolutely stunning in color!

Handfed baby Parakeets are a great “starter bird” for most children (and grown-ups)!

If you’re looking for a bird that’s slightly larger, we also welcomed two baby Sun Conures to our store! Sun Conures are affectionate birds with lots of personality and beautiful plumage. A more colorful bird is hard to find! Babies typically start life with a lot of green coloration, but grow into stunning oranges and yellows as they mature. They do have some talking potential, but are not particularly known for their vocabularies. They can be quite loud when calling their flock so if you are sensitive to noise, a Sun Conure might not be the best bird for you.

Our Ambassadors

These are our ambassadors -- the birds that represent the Golden Cockatoo!

Burnie, our 9 year old White Bellied Caique
Louise, our 20 year old African Grey Congo
Sam, Our beautiful 21 year old Blue and Gold Macaw

Sam, Burnie, and Louise all currently reside at the Golden Cockatoo and they have no intention of leaving! The staff has been caring for them throughout their entire lives, and they are living proof of just how long birds can be with you. Birds are not "throw-away pets" they are life-long companions! That's part of what makes them so special.

All three of our store birds are in their teens and they still have a long time yet to live. We encourage bird lovers to come by the store and meet Sam, Burnie, and Louise. Introductions are always free, and the memories will last a lifetime! (Especially if Sam feels like performing that day. That bird has a few tricks up his sleeve -- er, wing?)

Until next time,
Sam, Burnie, and Louise

Hello and Welcome

Hello, I'm Burnie. I am one of the two ambassadors at Golden Cockatoo. I would like to welcome you to the Golden Cockatoo's blog, where you'll find lots of helpful and fascinating information regarding the care and keeping of parrots! Here at the store there are a lot of crazy birds, and even more crazy caretakers. There's never a dull moment.

Our store is not just any old pet store. We are South Florida's largest bird store, specialising in one of a kind exotic parrots! There is a bird for everyone and for every need. We don't just sell birds - we sell life-long companions. Currently, we are working on something special that will help our customers decide which bird is right for them. We're very excited about it and we hope that it will enable us to place many more birds into appropriate, happy homes. Check back often for updates on this special surprise!

We also have toys, perches, cages, baths, food, treats, ropes, bells, swings and so much more! Anything your parrot could ever need is right here at our store. We also have the best staff around (they do take pretty good care of us)! They are caring, knowledgeable, and they really spoil us birds. Each and every one of the Golden Cockatoo's employees owns a parrot (or two or ten). Trust me, they really know their stuff - ask them anything! Here at the Golden Cockatoo, we always say, "the worst question is the one you don't ask" because in the end, it may be your parrot that suffers the consequences.
